Beer Can Burgers

Beer Can Burgers for a Burger of a Different Flavor

It’s burger season, and would could be be better than a new burger?  Beer Can Burgers are a delicious stuffed burger that you can put just about anything you love with burgers in, plus a whole lot more.  Melted cheese, sauteed vegetables, and of course bacon make these burgers a family favorite.  The trick is cooking them low and slow, with indirect heat on your grill.  That will cook these Beer Can Burgers up right and please the tastebuds of even the pickiest of burger connoisseurs.

What Makes Beer Can Burgers Great

Since these are burgers, I started off with some lean ground chuck.  To add a little pizazz to the meat, I mixed in some Montreal Steak Seasoning.  It bumped the flavor of the meat without drowning out the other flavors.  I stuffed my Beer Can Burgers with a few wonderful things.  I started out with smoked blue cheese, a family favorite.  I sauteed some onions and peppers, which I placed on top of the blue cheese.  Then I topped the whole thing with cheese, either a sliced sharp white cheddar, or a sliced extra sharp cheddar.  Both of them were amazing.  When everything was cooked, the flavors melted into each other, creating the best burger I have ever had.  Beer Can Burgers are now a frequent request in my house.

2 lbs lean ground chuck
2 T Montreal Steak Seasoning
1 can beer, any variety, washed and dried
1 pkg Smoked Blue Cheese, crumbled
2 yellow onions, diced
1 sweet pepper, diced
8 slices bacon
4 slices cheddar cheese

In a bowl, mix the ground chuck and steak seasoning well.
Saute the onions and pepper in a bit of olive oil until the onions turn clear.  Remove from heat.
Form the meat into 4 balls.
Press the beer can into the center of the meat and form the meat around the beer can, leaving at least ¼ inch of meat as a base.
Gently remove the beer can and press the meat into shape if it shifted.
Wrap a slice of bacon around the burger and press into the meat.  Wrap another slice around, placing the middle of the second slice over the opening left by the first slice.
Sprinkle the cavity with blue cheese.  Top with the sauteed vegetables and a slice of cheese.
To cook, heat half of your grill on medium heat and place the burgers on the unlit half.  Bake until cooked throughout, about 30-40 minutes, depending on your grill.

Making Beer Can Burgers for Now and Later

Beer Can Burgers are such a favorite with my family, I make them up and freeze them for later.  I go by the adage, if I’m making up some, making up some more isn’t that much more work!  Once I have a bunch of Beer Can Burgers made up, I freeze them on a baking sheet.  When they are frozen solid, I place them in a plastic zippy bag and put them back in the freezer for when we want more.  It doesn’t take long to go through all of our Beer Can Burgers!
